Recommended devices and connection

What to run LockLedger on: a computer for Admins and Managers, a phone or tablet for Techs, why a connection is always needed, and how the screens change from a computer to a tablet to a phone.

LockLedger runs in a web browser. There is nothing to buy and no app store: any computer, phone or tablet with a current browser and an internet connection can use it. This page helps you pick the right device for each person, and shows what the screens look like on each.

The short version

Admins and Managers
A laptop or desktop computer. Setting up sites, equipment, parts and people, and reviewing tickets and reports, all involve long lists and forms, and they are easiest on a big screen. A phone works for a quick look or a quick fix.
Techs
A phone or a tablet that they carry to the machine. They open tickets, take them, lock equipment and clock in right where the work is, and the camera is there for lock photos.
Everyone
A connection to the internet, all the time. LockLedger has no offline mode.

A connection is always needed

LockLedger saves as you go, which means it is always talking to the internet. With Wi-Fi or mobile data it works. Without a signal it can't load a screen or save what you typed, and the installed app on a phone behaves the same way, because it is the same LockLedger opened from an icon.

Check the signal where the work is

A phone that works fine at the office can lose its signal in a far corner of the plant or inside a metal enclosure. Before you rely on phones for Techs, walk the places they work with a phone and open LockLedger there. If a spot has no signal, that is where a Tech will not be able to load a ticket or save.

How the screens change with the size of the device

LockLedger adjusts to the screen it is on. The same ticket screen is shown below on a computer, on a tablet and on a phone.

On a computer: the ticket list on the left and the open ticket beside it.
On a tablet held upright (820 pixels wide in this check): the same two panes, side by side.
On a phone: one pane at a time. The `Back to list` button returns you to the list.

The rule is simple. On a screen about 768 pixels wide or wider, a list and the record you picked from it sit side by side. On anything narrower, which means every phone and some small tablets held upright, you see one at a time: tap a row in the list to open it, and tap Back to list to return. The same goes for the other list-and-detail screens, such as Equipment, Parts and Users. LockLedger does not detect what kind of device you have. It only looks at the width of the screen, so turning a tablet sideways gives it the wider layout.

Admins and Managers: a computer is best

The Admin home screen puts every section on one screen of tiles: tickets, equipment, parts, users and the rest, with the key numbers across the top. On a computer you see all of it at once.

On a phone the same screen works. The tiles stack two to a row and you scroll down to the one you want. Everything is still there, so an Admin or a Manager can check on a ticket from a phone. It is just more scrolling, and long setup forms are slower to fill in with thumbs than with a keyboard.

Techs: a phone or a tablet with a camera

A Tech lands on Open Tickets, the list of work waiting to be done. On a phone it is one clear list, with My Tickets and All Tickets at the top to switch between the Tech's own work and everyone's open work. Tapping a ticket opens it with the buttons a Tech needs: Take this ticket, Lock Equipment and Clock In.

  • The camera. The Lock Equipment screen has a photo field. On a phone it offers the camera, so a Tech can photograph the lock as it goes on. On a computer the same field opens a file picker, so you choose a picture you already have.
  • Phone or tablet. A phone is enough. A tablet works the same way, and held sideways it shows the list and the ticket side by side.

Which browser

Use a current version of a mainstream browser. We have tested LockLedger in Chrome on a computer and in Safari on an iPhone, including the installed app. Other current browsers, such as Microsoft Edge, Safari on a Mac and Chrome on Android, should work too, but we have not tested them ourselves, so check your own device before you roll it out.

Putting it on a home screen

Any device can open LockLedger from a bookmark, but you can also install it so it has its own icon and its own window. It is the same LockLedger, still with no offline mode. See Install LockLedger on your phone or computer. To get a pop-up on a phone or computer when a ticket is assigned or a Site Alert goes out, see Get notifications on your phone or computer.
